Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
⚠️This book is a sequel following Fourth Wing. Beware of spoilers if you have not read the first book in the series.
“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

To start, Fourth Wing was my favourite book of last year. I was obsessed with it! This sequel – no where near as good, in my opinion. However I still enjoyed it far more than I was expecting to based on other reviews. This book did not have to be over 600 pages. Our characters rehash the same argument a dozen times and do not communicate well.
Without any spoilers of course, I am not sure how I feel about the direction we’re taking the plot. We have another 3 books to go in this series, and the ending of book 2 got …. weird? Where do we go from here?
This series is very polarizing. What did you think of Iron Flame?
